In Australia, MWIA supports projects run by organisations that work with women and communities to transform unjust structures and reduce poverty and oppression.

MWIA has supported the Loreto Sisters and their projects in India for two decades. Today, we continue our commitment to fostering sustainable change in the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Inspired by Mary Ward, the Loreto Sisters first arrived in Kenya in 1921 to establish a school for girls. One hundred years later, the Loreto Sisters work has expanded to include supporting some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities to bring about systemic change.

The Loreto Sisters first began their development work in Eastern Nepal in 1994. Within two years the Sisters had established a permanent multi-purpose outreach base in Dharan to facilitate the education of women and children living in the region

The Loreto Sisters began working in Peru in 1981 and for the past 15 years have been living in Jicamarca, on the outskirts of Lima. The Sisters’ work is focused on social justice, education, health and female empowerment.

Sitting on Australia’s doorstep is Timor-Leste, one of the least developed countries in the world. Join MWIA in raising much needed funds to support communities in the remote villages of the Baucau district.

In 2006 two Loreto Sisters, Elizabeth Donnan & Pat Hanvey began a new foundation in Zambia. From their home in Lukulu, on the banks of the Zambezi River, they work in grassroots development, primary health care, and education. Most recently, they established the Sancta Maria College of Nursing and Midwifery, promoting health education and economic development in this remote community.
