In 2020, Mary Ward International worked alongside Loreto Sisters, partners, communities, and supporters during a period marked by global uncertainty, COVID-19, climate events, and deepening inequality.
Across Australia, India, Kenya, the Philippines, Peru, South Sudan, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, and Zambia, Mary Ward International supported locally led initiatives responding to urgent needs while continuing long-term work in education, health, livelihoods, and community support.
During this reporting period, Mary Ward International provided $1.1 million in direct financial support to international programs and $50,000 to partners in Australia. As COVID-19 placed extraordinary pressure on communities, Special Purpose Grants helped partners respond quickly with food, medical supplies, personal protective equipment, crisis accommodation, baby milk, and essential support.
Our 2020 Annual Impact Report shares the stories, partnerships, and outcomes made possible through this shared commitment.

Across the global Mary Ward network, partners responded to immediate hardship while continuing to support education, health, livelihoods, and opportunity.
In Rumbek, South Sudan, the Mary Ward Primary Health Care Clinic helped families access vital health care during a time of increased need. The clinic supported children, mothers, students, and the wider Maker Kuei community through treatment, immunisation, nutrition support, and health education.
In Ostico and Gari-Uai, Timor-Leste, agricultural training and farming equipment helped local young people create new income opportunities. With support from the Loreto Sisters, Mary Ward International, and Teen Spirit Foundation, the community developed vegetable gardens, rice paddies, and a pathway to sustainable livelihoods.
In Lukulu, Zambia, education changed the course of Morgan’s life. With the support of a Loreto bursary, he studied primary education, became a teacher, and continued towards his dream of working in special education.
In West Bengal, India, families already facing hardship in the brickfields were further affected by COVID-19 and Cyclone Amphan. Alongside Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre, support reached cyclone-hit communities through food, clothing, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, solar lanterns, medical supplies, education, and health care.
These stories reflect the strength of local communities, the commitment of project partners, and the generosity of those who continued to walk alongside Mary Ward International during an uncertain year.
Thank you to our donors, partners, schools, Sisters, and supporters for helping make this work possible.
Together, we continue working towards a just world where women share leadership, children thrive, and communities flourish.
