This edition reflects on the strength, leadership, and resilience of women across the global Mary Ward International network.
Inspired by Mary Ward’s belief that “women in time to come will do much,” this edition explores what becomes possible when women and girls are supported to know their rights, build confidence, access education, strengthen livelihoods, and take their place as leaders in their own communities.
Inside this edition, you will read stories from West Bengal, India, where women and girls living in tea estate communities continue to face poverty, child marriage, child labour, domestic violence, trafficking risks, and limited access to secure income or legal protection. Through projects such as Collective Voices, Ethical Enterprises, and Legal Aid, the Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre is helping women, children, and communities understand their rights, access support, build practical skills, and create new pathways towards independence.
You will also meet Sukhni and Binita Oraon, two sisters from Sukna who began as students in the Sukna Jute Program and are now teachers themselves. Their story shows how vocational training can become more than a source of income. It can build confidence, deepen leadership, and create a trusted space where young women can learn, share, and support one another.
In Australia, this edition shares stories from the Piriwa Op Shop and Enterprise Hub in Balgo and the Wilcannia Marketplace Hair Salon, where First Nations women are building skills, strengthening cultural identity, creating employment pathways, and leading change within their own communities.
This edition also marks an important moment in the wider Mary Ward story, as the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Congregation of Jesus move towards becoming one.
Together, these stories remind us that strong women do build strong communities. When women are supported to claim their dignity, freedom, and voice, the impact reaches far beyond the individual.
